"This was a great class! Very educational and fun. I liked learning a new skill and the 'sciencey nature' of the structures we made." - Student at NCSU

Artist Biography

Alicia Moya-Méndez is a wire artist, interdisciplinary science art educator and photographer. She earned her BA in English and BS in Psychology from the University of North Carolina - Charlotte and continued her education in science with post-baccalaureate courses.

During college, Alicia discovered her love for art as an academic tutor. It was during sessions with students, combined with her own Chemistry courses, where she realized the power in art creation to teach/learn science. She now interfuses her experience and unique perspectives to create science art sculptures and interactive projects as well as teach workshops on science art to the community.

Alicia’s photography consists of nature and macro themes with the intention to show small things usually passed by in the busy day to day. In her Traveling Gem collection, real crystal patterns are designed on clothing and accessories. She currently lives in Portland, OR with her two dogs.

Teaching Philosophy

Alicia's teaching philosophy and practices offer students hands-on, artistic ways to learn science concepts. Students engage with the material and each other while learning to creatively problem solve. Students are also encouraged to consider different learning styles as well as reflecting on what styles suit them best when learning new material. Optional pre and post surveys can also be administered during the course to collect research and determine effectiveness of this type of teaching.
