Teaching Philosophy

Teaching comes from discovery, through wonder, humor, beauty, and story. We rely on the audience’s active engagement. We hope teachers and students are delighted and enlightened by their discoveries.

“This is the best show I have ever seen. The creativity, the story line, and the music were perfection ... Appeal for all age levels is a real plus.” --Principal, PPS

Thumbelina Less

An original shadow play based on the classic fairy tale By Hans Christian Andersen Oregon Shadow Theatre employs colorful shadow puppets with live music in this shadow play based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale. Thumbelina has adventures with frogs in a pond, flying beetles in a tree, a swallow in the woods, a mouse in a field and a mole in his underground home. The original flower child is a natural for some Rock ‘n Roll, and the script supports a comic subtext linking the pop music of the “flower power” era to Thumbelina's journey to the land of flowers fairies. Live music is performed on electric guitar, hammered dulcimer, and an assortment of percussion and sound effects devices.

Venue Requirements: 90 minute setup and 60 minute break down time. Break between performances: 25 mins. Can perform anywhere, but prefer stage. Need 14' L x 14' W x 8'3" H performance space. Room should be able to get DARK (dark enough to show a movie -- a film, not a video!). Need 2 electrical outlets and one 6'-8' table. If performed on stage, students may be seated on floor or in chairs. If performed on floor, first several rows of students should be seated on the floor.
