The Roots of Hip-Hop Less

Valerie Bergman, Darryl Thomas and their ensemble of dancers take students on a high-energy adventure in cultural history, tracing the popular African-American dance style hip-hop back to its roots. The program begins with a new dance featuring the latest hip-hop and break-dance steps. Then, using authentic African instruments, audience participation, costumes and vignettes such as “hamboning” and “voguing,” they recount the journey of African-Americans from their homes in Africa though slavery to the present. Each presentation is tailored to the participating age groups.

iLumiDance Revealed Less

Fusing dance and computer technology, iLumiDance Revealed includes an interactive school assembly and workshops that give k-12 youth access to high quality (professional) dancing while simultaneously getting them excited about the "technology" component of STEM learning. The iLumiDance Revealed assembly shows how RDT dance artists utilize the STEM engineering design process (EDP) to create innovative new technologies in dance art such as wearable electronic costumes and electronic puppets. In the iLumiDance Revealed assembly, selected students come on-stage to interact with a 5' tall electronic light-wire puppet as they help to create their “own” iLumiDance, after which they return to the audience and watch visually stunning excerpts from the 50-minute iLumiDance show.

The iLumiDance Revealed workshop features project-based learning that engages students through dance art while they acquire the skills to utilize computer technology in the creation of their own unique iLumiDance: a 1-minute dance and technology project where they collaborate in teams to physically manipulate (choreograph) the legs, arms, torso and head of a 5' tall electronic light-wire puppet while the computer which they have programmed wirelessly controls the on and off operations of the light wire for each body part while synced to a music score.

Venue Requirements: Must be able to completely darken the space and a minimum area of 25’ L x 18’ W x 12’H. Cannot perform on carpet of concrete. Need a dressing area close to performance space and access to running water. Set-up: 90 minutes; Break between: 25 minutes; Strike: 20 minutes
