From The Page to the Stage Less

With Caren’s artistic guidance, students produce simple theater productions adapted from the text of a fairy or folk tale. Using tableaux, narration, dialogue, characterization and movement, they deepen their understanding of literacy concepts such as imaging, inference, synthesis and determining importance. Residency can stand alone or accompany the Arts for Learning Literacy Unit 1: Upside Down Fairy Tales.

Leaping into Literacy: Who? What? Where? Less

Join Caren Graham, Drammy Award-winning actress, voice coach, teaching artist and director of theater, as she guides students in creating the actor’s toolbox: body, voice and imagination. Students gain a greater understanding of artistic discipline, group cooperation and problem solving as they learn to inhabit characters and practice skills in the expressive arts. Caren creates an inclusive learning environment where all students can discover their creative potential and participate in methods that encourage hands-on learning. Text from any curriculum can be adapted; possibilities include Louise Fitzhugh’s Harriet the Spy, Kate DiCamillo’s The Tale of Despereaux, Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, Native American tales, classic fairy tales or science and environmental themes.

Additional Costs: Costs for making copies, unless the school allows artist to make copies at the school.
