About the Artist

Carlos Reyes is a noted Portland poet, translator, and world traveler, and has been teaching since 1982. He has given readings in Bangalore, India, the Mt Shannon Arts Festival, The White House, and The Nail in Limerick (Ireland). His poetry has been well published, and he received The Fortner Award from St Andrews College. Carlos has completed followships and residencies all over the world.

Teaching Philosophy

Carlos has a very relaxed attitude in his workshops. His definition of poetry is all inclusive. Poetry is language, imagination and way we use them. Carlos uses simple tools to encourage and engage.

"Students wrote fantastic poetry, and their enthusiasm has carried over into their regular language arts classes." --6th grade teacher, St. Helens School District

Poetry Writing: Stretching the Imagination Less

Beginning with something as simple as list making (“I am…”), Carlos leads students toward more complicated pieces that consider emotional themes and uses for inspiration a wide variety of recognized poetry from around the world. Though an end product is not the focus of this writing process, the result is always poetry, which students can read aloud to each other. Carlos can teach poetry writing bilingually (English/Spanish).
