Square Roots Less

Let’s have a dance now! As students learn to dance with each other in squares, circles and reels, they build community while actively enhancing their ability to listen and follow directions. Caroline Oakley, professional musician and dance caller, teaches Southern Appalachian square dancing and other forms of American social dancing with patience and a sense of humor. She tells brief stories of the history and culture of these dances, giving students insight into the significant place these dances hold in history. Caroline is joined by another musician who assists in teaching dances, then plays while students practice what they’ve learned. Each session weaves together a balance of physical activity, exposure to new rhythms and music, intellectual stimulation and plain fun. Caroline and her ensemble can work with up to 60 students (two classrooms) in a residency session.

Additional Costs: There are additional fees if P.A. system is to be provided by the artist or if extra musicians are desired for a larger event.

Caroline Oakley and the Old-Time Highway Less

"All join hands in a great big ring and circle to the left around that thing!" The beauty of community dancing is that everyone can engage and participate through action and movement. Children have an innate need to move and an instinctive love of music. Caroline channels both with patience. She is engaging and clear-- with a knack for improvising to meet student needs. Caroline gets all students moving to live music by teaching simple and humorous figures while incorporating geography, history, migration patterns, rhythm, singing and movement in addition to the higher order thinking skills mentioned in her artist statement. Students dance to the sounds of high-octane yet beautiful old-time string band music provided by the Old Time Highway’s fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass.

Please note: This performance differs from other Young Audiences programs in that students need plenty of space to dance! Please keep your space limitations in mind.

Additional Costs: There are additional fees if P.A. system is to be provided by the artist or if extra musicians are desired for a larger event.

Travel Costs: For sites located more than 15 miles from downtown Portland, an additional mileage fee will be applied and is calculated using the IRS reimbursement rate.

Venue Requirements: Set-up time: 30 minutes. Break b/t performances: 5 minutes. Larger community space such as gym, cafeteria, auditorium, covered tarmac ideal.
