Natya Leela Academy

About the Artist

As a choreographer and dancer of Bharathanatyam, a narrative & athletic South Indian dance form, Suba creates performances and workshops that seek to enable students to discover the dancer within.

Teaching Philosophy

Suba aims to make this holistic and traditional dance/theater form accessible. Kids experience story-telling with hand & facial gestures, which aids them to discover literacy skills through movement.

"Kids love learning the hand movements and their meanings. A well-developed program." --2nd grade teacher, PPS

What the Hands Paint, the Eyes Follow: South ... Less

Fully costumed dancers demonstrate the athletic and narrative dance form of the Tamil Nadu region of India. Subashini Ganesan, founder of Natya Leela Academy, has been studying the form since she was 4 ½ years old and shares its cultural history and origins. Through a variety of participatory activities, she leads students to discover for themselves how to tell stories with their hands and eyes.
