About the Artist

Artist's residency schedule is full for the year. Please contact us about a performance for this year, or a residency for next year!

Red Yarn Productions is a folk music and puppetry company founded by artist, educator and performer Andy Furgeson. Through arts programs and dynamic shows, RYP creatively engages children in folklore.

Teaching Philosophy

Children carry the potential for profound self-expression. Andy helps them channel their talent. Through music, puppetry and performance, he engages all types of learners in the creative process.

“I have performed, taught and created with Andy. With songs, puppets & lots of heart, he is a rare breed. See for yourself!” --Bruce Orr, Mudeye Puppets

The Deep Woods: Animals in American Folksongs Less

Animal characters play an important role in the multicultural folksongs of the United States. Musician, puppeteer and storyteller Andy Furgeson imagines that all of those animals inhabit the same magical community: the Deep Woods. In character as Red Yarn, a red-bearded bard, Andy will lead students into the Deep Woods, teaching classic songs like “Froggie Went A-Courtin',” “Mr. Rabbit” and “The Fox” along the way. Mixing live musical performance with puppetry and interactive storytelling, this program engages students with the songs and stories of our national heritage, from African-American Br'er Rabbit tales to English nursery rhymes. Children will stomp, clap, dance, sing along, and act out characters in Red Yarn’s energetic show. Curriculum connections include literacy through song lyrics and folklore, social studies and forest ecology.

Folk Song Puppet Show Less

What happens when you combine two of the most ancient, engaging methods of storytelling? In this 4-5 day residency, teaching artist Andy Furgeson (AKA Red Yarn) will help students adapt a classic folk song into a lively musical puppet show. After learning to sing a folk song, students will dig deeper into its lyrics to pull out the narrative. They’ll make inventive sock puppets of the song’s characters and create voices and movements to enhance their puppetry. Finally, the class will perform their musical puppet show for another class, or the larger community. This program supports students' literacy, historical understanding of folklore, visual and sculptural art skills, musical aptitude, and performance skills. Folk songs can be chosen to connect to current curriculum or student interests.

Additional Costs: Expect supply costs of around $1 per student.

Travel Costs: Artist may charge for travel costs based on site location.
