Outside the Vox Less

BodyVox blends bold athleticism and freewheeling imagination with comical characters, quirky sound effects and energizing rhythms to explore the connection between science, math and dance. Discovering the cause-and-effect relationship of force on a dancer’s body leads to discussions fueled by creative thinking. Interactive demonstrations allow students to experience how relationships in numbers and shapes affect the timing and spacing of movement. Each segment of this unique program has two-parts: dance as art (performance) and dance as science (discussion and audience participation). BodyVox empowers students to break free of their own boundaries by illuminating the link between learning and applying science and math to dance. The company tailors the science and math concepts it demonstrates to assure age and grade appropriateness.

Making Science Dance Less

This adaptable, five-session residency is tailored to the personality and science focus of each class in a planning meeting with teachers. The progression of sessions illuminates dance as an art and as a science. Throughout the residency, students work with a partner to create an original dance piece using improvisation, movement variation, choreography and sharing/performing. Dance as science is integrated from the content choices below. Join BodyVox professional teaching artists to experience the joy of creating and movement. Developed through the John F. Kennedy Center’s Seminar on arts-integrated residencies.

  • Making the Solar System Dance: Students create movements that demonstrate elements of motion present in the solar system, including gravity, rotation, revolution, axis and orbit.
  • Making Plants Dance: Plants come alive as students show this life cycle from seeds through germination.
  • Making Physics Dance: This experience in motion allows students in grades 4-8 to study equations such as speed = distance/time, as well as the concepts of velocity and acceleration. For a variation, this residency can also focus on forces (cause and effect).
  • Making ____ Dance: Create a residency focus with BodyVox that meets specific classroom or school curricular needs in any subject, including other science areas, literacy or basic math.

Additional Costs: Additional planning and prep time will be billed at $75 per hour.
