Mike Yager is a mad scientist and educator who integrates the arts and sciences. His art combines electrical engineering and mixed media sculpture. Mike currently coordinates the MakerSpace for the Portland Children’s Museum and teaches integrated arts.

Teaching Philosophy

Mike’s workshops combine science and engineering concepts with artistic techniques to foster creative, self-directed problem solving skills. Students see the extraordinary potential of everyday materials as they tinker, experiment, and invent together.

Civic Engineering to Save the World Less

The fair people of Portland face certain peril as surprising and unlikely new disasters befall our fine city each class. Our only hope is the quick thinking and ingenuity of our young engineers. In this scalable 3-5 day residency, students will work together, learning about simple machines, physics, electronics and more while saving the day with their artistic inventions.

Into the Wild Blue Yonder Less

Students discover the wonder of flight and aviation science as they design and build their own working rockets, whirligigs, gliders and more. Working in an iterative design process, students will evaluate their inventions and work to improve their designs through a series of prototypes.

Everyone loves robots! In this fun, fast-paced workshop students will build their own working art-robot with recycled materials while learning grade level appropriate concepts in electronics. Watch in amazement as art bots wobble, wander, and explore the classroom on their own.
