Teaching Philosophy

Poetry and Performance Poetry gives students the tools to actively engage with their imaginations, creativity, and critical thinking. Students learn to express themselves, practice public speaking, and learn to make a difference in the world.

Personal Stories in Poetic Forms: A Creative Introducti ... Less

Who are we? Where are we from? Where do we want to go? The poetic art of autobiography and creative self-expression. Everyone has a personal story. What is yours? Students will explore the stories of various poets through different poetic forms and poetically express our own life stories utilizing key poetic and literary devices (parts of speech, metaphor, simile, personification, onomatopoeia, etc.) Emphasis on word choice and vocabulary building. Strong focus on the process of draft, edit, polish. Performance sharing and community (poem) building are key components.

This is a fantastic opportunity for teachers and students to expand intellectual horizons through the creative art of poetry. Classes will investigate the concept of transformation through poetry and curriculum integration. Students will explore and express the wonders of nature, or science, or math, or history utilizing various poetic forms (free verse, haiku, acrostic, concrete, lyric, tanka, ode, pantoum, renga, concrete/shape poems, etc.). Strong focus on the process of draft, edit, polish. Performance and speaking skills are integral. This is a great way to creatively enhance the study of any curriculum, while expanding creative writing and speaking skills!

Through the study of professional poets who have something to say students will craft original works of their own around the topic of Social Justice and slam perform them! Emphasis on the process of draft, edit, and polish. Key poetic forms and literary devices explored. Student performance and speech (public speaking) skills are a strong focus.
