About the Artist

Jamie is not available for the rest of the school year.

Jamie Houghton is a spoken word performer and poet. She performs her writing through many mediums, including performance poetry, playing bass, songwriting, and storytelling. She is passionate about inspiring students through written and spoken word.

Teaching Philosophy

As an instructor my passions are poetry, interdisciplinary curriculum, and special needs classrooms. I’m inspired when listening to the needs of classrooms and communities, and adjusting my approach to create the best experience possible for each student.

“Jamie is a conscientious and eager educator. She was open to assimilating the ideas of other teachers into the planning. As difficult as it can be coming in as a guest teacher, Jamie had no trouble connecting with our students."

Poetry and Collage Less

Students create poems and collages that incorporate excerpts of original and found language. Students experience the power of free association as a group through games and sharing work, as well as experimenting with word choice, figurative language and sensory detail. Students create small scale collages with paper and found materials, and explore image-transfer techniques, line, value and color. Self Portrait Through Poetry Less

Students create written OR multi-media self-portraits, exploring sensory detail and self through metaphor. Students create original short poems OR collages that incorporate writing. Students explore image-transfer techniques using graphite pencil, paper, found materials and images, and learn to identify elements of design such as line, value and color. Students express themselves through intentional pairing of image and language, as well as learning more about each other through sharing these portraits. Pieces can be integrated into a community display or used as part of a student’s individual portfolio. Digital option: if Ipads are available students can create digital collages for the final product, and digital work can be displayed in an online gallery or school website.
