About the Artist

The artist's schedule is full for this year. Please contact us about next year!

Recycled Puppets Less

A cereal box is cracking a joke; egg crates are dancing; a soda bottle is soaring through outer space. Imagine a world of re-use where anything is possible - because it is!

KCPuppetree presents a hands-on program in which all students collaborate to gather recycled objects then create individual and/or team built puppets. Fun interactive lessons on re-use and waste management are only the beginning, as students dive into ordinary plastic and paper materials and truly create one-of-a-kind creations. This program can be formatted to fit any classroom and curriculum goal.

3-day residency: Students learn about common materials and are encouraged to collect objects at home. Artist guides individual or group teams how to piece together objects to create a moving and living puppet. The class engages in a final puppet parade during the last half of the final session.

5-day residency: Students learn about common materials and waste management systems (level of instruction adjusted to grade level and curriculum goals) and are encouraged to collect objects at home. Artist guides individual or group teams to piece together objects to create a moving and living puppet. Upon teacher request, the class may also spend a fun (and messy) day of paper mache. Class will be be directed in either a short play or a fun puppet parade with a final performance at the last session.

Teacher(s) and Teaching Artist will agree upon format, curriculum connections, and supplies at planning meeting. Artist will supply basic tools (hole punchers, hot glue, staplers) and a large supply of usable recycled objects, including pre-made puppet heads for shorter workshops. Classrooms are encouraged to collect recycled objects both prior to and during the residency.

Residencies are easily completed entirely in the classroom. Upon request, a paper mache component can be included, which may require sink availability and covering tables.

Supplies: $1 per student

Travel: $0.55 per mile after 30 miles round trip from Portland City Center.
