About the Artist

Teaching artist/folklorist since 1979. Recipient of grant from PPS in 1986 to conduct a living history project with middle school students. Featured performer at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, 2010.

Teaching Philosophy

Rick uses novel elements of American folklore to inspire student involvement. Through collaborative participation students improve literary skills and their ability to use arts activities for effective learning.

Ramblin' Rick's Old-Time Music Show Less

Join Rick as he takes students on a musical journey that includes a fun and informative exploration of unusual American folk instruments and household items such as the musical saw, linberjack, spoons, jew’s-harp, nose whistle, washboard and washtub bass. This highly participatory show includes guitar, banjo, auto harp, ukulele and dulcimer. For the finale, students accompany Rick in creating an old-time jazz band.

Travel Costs: For sites located more than 15 miles from downtown Portland, an additional mileage fee will be applied and is calculated using the IRS reimbursement rate.

Venue Requirements: Set-up/strike time: 20 min. Break between performances: 15 min. Can perform anywhere, but prefers a stage. Space: 10’x12.’ First row to be 10’ from performance area. Needs: 1 chair w/o arms, 1 electrical outlet

Like cat’s cradle, only better! Students learn to weave a simple loop of string into a variety of lifelike figures and to perform seemingly impossible escape tricks. Follow-up materials are provided.
