About the Artist
Red Yarn, aka Andy Furgeson, is a TX-born, OR-based family performer who weaves folksongs and puppetry into high-energy shows and engaging arts programs. Through performances and residencies, he reinvigorates American folklore for younger generations.
Teaching Philosophy
Children carry the potential for profound self-expression. Andy helps them explore several expressive art forms at once. Through group singing, lyric-writing, puppetry and performance, Andy engages all types of learners in the creative process.
Testimonial
"Red Yarn is not only an amazing artist and musician, he knows how to work with young learners. He challenges them, builds confidence, helps them identify art in the world...all while having so much fun! I recommend this experience highly." K-5 Teacher
Program Description
In this classroom performance program, family folksinger & puppeteer Red Yarn will perform interactive folk songs of the USA, encouraging students to sing, dance, stomp and clap along. Between songs, Red Yarn will perform puppetry skits with his "critter" puppets -- animal characters from folklore that share social emotional lessons and other curriculum connections. Students will learn about multicultural musical traditions of the USA, learn some new music concepts, and engage with basic puppetry techniques along the way.
This performance can be shortened to 30 minutes if that is preferable. This is an acoustic show without amplification, so works for up to 30 students in a classroom space. For a larger space like a gym or auditorium, please schedule Red Yarn's "The Deep Woods" performance: http://guide.ya-or.org/programs/DeepWoods.
