About the Artist

As a choreographer and dancer of Bharathanatyam, a narrative & athletic South Indian dance form, Suba creates performances and workshops that seek to enable students to discover the dancer within.

Teaching Philosophy

Suba aims to make this holistic and traditional dance/theater form accessible. Kids experience story-telling with hand & facial gestures, which aids them to discover literacy skills through movement.

Testimonial

Suba has a very ... respectful way of engaging children... Her ability to bring... students from practice to performance was impressive." --Teacher, PPS

Program Description

By learning body postures, rhythmic footwork patterns and hand gestures of this traditional athletic South Indian dance form, students are able to dramatize stories in a new way, both individually and as a group. Subashini Ganesan, founder of Natya Leela Academy, has been studying the form since she was 4 ½ years old and provides students with tools to challenge themselves physically, emotionally and intellectually. She teaches students about the Hindu gods and goddesses who are main characters in many of the dance stories. This residency can culminate in a student performance of dance routines they have learned or choreographed using the traditional elements. By the end of their time with Suba, students will have had many opportunities to discover their inner voices, increase body strength and develop self-discipline.
