Program Description

This residency integrates both digital and visual art techniques to create stop motion animations using iPads. Chloë introduces this art form by showing a variety of short stop motion films to highlight different animation methods. Students have the opportunity to share and discuss what they already know about the animation process and their observations and discoveries after watching the films.

This residency encourages teamwork and group communication to experience the collaborative aspect of this art form. Students are encouraged to engage in dialog to create animation storyboards and mind maps, while brainstorming and planning their digital stories. Chloë demonstrates fundamental observational drawing and watercolor techniques and guides the students through creating the pieces and parts of their animation. She also teaches the students how to use the iStop motion App and practice photography, videography and editing skills.

In this residency students learn animation vocabulary and concepts such as, focus, exposure, white balance, composition, scale and movement. The subject matter of this residency can be easily adjusted to fit within a current curriculum or classroom theme that will benefit and deepen student learning. Each small group creates a final animation piece that can be shared and enjoyed by their classmates, school and family!
