About the Artist

Hossein Salehi, master on the Santoor and of Persian Music began playing at the age of 7. Nearly 55 years after striking his first notes, Maestro Salehi's main goal is to share his knowledge with those who show a genuine interest in the performing arts.

Teaching Philosophy

Maestro Salehi believes you teach and learn best when you love what you do. He begins with what his students know and gradually introduces them to the unknown while moving from simple to more sophisticated.

Program Description

Musician Hossein Salehi, from ArtMax Academy- a non-profit dedicated to expanding cultural horizons through music, dance, and the arts- introduces students to the fundamentals of musical notation while they experiment using the rhythm sticks, Daf and their hands to make specific actions to create the sounds they are reading in the notes. Over the course of the residency students will learn to hear and play rhythm patterns alone, in small groups, and with fellow students. Students will have the experience of combining their rhythms with the rhythms of other groups. The class is paced in a way that the group moves on once each person has learned the rhythm they are working on. Students who catch on early have an opportunity to teach through modeling and working alongside their peers. Each session ends with the students accompanying Mr. Salehi using the rhythms they have learned to play together in an original melody. In this way each class ends with a concert. At the end of the residency students will have the opportunity to play for each other to share what they learned.
