Program Description

How would Marie Antoinette have taken a selfie? Students have grown up assuming everyone can take a photo of themselves and put it on social media. In this residency we will put a historical perspective on how, in just ten years, smartphone photography and apps have radically changed the way we see portraiture. We will start the residency by looking at the way self-portraits were used in the renaissance by Rembrandt and continue with the way artists have always used them to express themselves and show who they are. After viewing and learning about self-portraits and the way they reflect history and society, students will use what they learned to create self portraits in a new ways. The possibilities for this project are wide-ranging. It can easily be used for a history or language arts class to recreate how a particular character or famous person might have "taken a selfie".
