About the Artist
OBT strives to share meaningful, high-quality dance with students. We hope to inspire students to move their bodies in different ways and to connect with the community by removing physical and cultural barriers, giving greater access to dance.
Teaching Philosophy
At OBT we understand students learn about and through their bodies in movement exploration, creative expression and dancing play. In an increasingly digital world, we strive to bring the joy of pure movement to every student through dance!
Testimonial
"Kids love it! The extra movement opportunity is great for all students and gives them fresh eyes for learning the rest of the day... I have never seen my students, especially boys, smile SO BIG!" --1st Grade Teacher
Program Description
Students will collaborate with teaching artist to create an original piece of choreography inspired by children's literature, picture books and illustrations! Through this process, students learn that the body may be used as a form of communication and storytelling. In schools where possible, families may be invited to attend the last class as a performance day.
In addition to creative exploration and choreography, each class includes a whole-body warm up and stretch routine, strengthening gross motor skills through progressive sequences while learning about ballet technique and vocabulary through the elements of dance (space, time, energy, shape).
Depending on the anchor text, additional curriculum concepts may also be explored such as social emotional skills, earth and life science, literacy, etc. Teachers may choose from the stories listed below:
Piggie and Gerald Series by Mo Willems (K-1)
The Very Clumsy Click Beetle by Eric Carle (K-1)
Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems (K-2)
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (K-2)
Caremela Full of Wishes by Matt de la Peña (2-6)
Windows by Julia Denos (2-6)
A Stone Sat Still by Brendan Wenzel (3-6)
The Goblin and the Empty Chair by Mem Fox (3-6)
Say Something! by Peter H. Reynolds (K-6)
Grade bands serve as a guide, but teaching artists are flexible with teacher requests.
