About the Artist

Beth pulls materials from everyday life and transforms them into art that cultivates connection to self, community and the planet. With each piece she is tending to our need for community and strengthening the routes and bridges back to our humanity.

Teaching Philosophy

When we feel connected we are engaged and invested. To cultivate connection I use mindfulness tools alongside creative exploration and play. As we strengthen our connections we are strengthening the possibility of a bright and liberated future for all.

Testimonial

"Beth's insight and intuition are inspiring. Her efficiency and flexibility make her a pleasure to work with." --Lisa Belt, PTA president Ockley Green Middle School

Program Description

In this residency we will create a playful, polka dot installation for any indoor space that needs uplifting. Note: This is not a long term installation, but rather an infusion of color and pattern for as long as the school feels appropriate. Materials will likely last for a school year, but not longer. This project can be done in 2, 3 or 4 sessions depending on the needs and budget of the school.

We begin with what designer Ingrid Fetell Lee calls the aesthetics of joy: patterns, round shapes, bright colors, multiplicity and lightness. We then take these elements of joy and research and apply them to our creative exploration.

Process:
- We begin every session with a different grounding exercise, learning a number of self soothing tools throughout the residency.
- We explore the elements of joy and how contemporary artists use these elements in their artwork. Students will draw what feels good and develop patterns from their own imagination.
- Students will learn about affirmations and what if questions and explore how to develop a pattern that is in relationship with an affirmation.
- We experiment with paper collage and pattern. Students may make an "inspiration poster" to take home.
- Finally each individual creates a round collage on cardboard that becomes a polka dot in the large joy mural installation! This exemplifies how we are all unique and when we work together we can make a great impact.
- Reflection on the tools we have learned for self care and how it felt to do a creative project together
