Program Requirements Between sessions folded circle models are expected to be displayed in the classroom for ongoing reference throughout the residency. It is important for students to have their work in view in order to build upon their experience from session to session. Ash can work from one classroom or travel to each classroom. A dedicated shelf/wheeled cart for storing and transportation of materials throughout the residency would be helpful. All materials needed for circle folding will be provided. Many students find they like to use a notebook for tracking information or mark-making materials at some point in the process.

Program Description

The circle is whole - a shape and form that demonstrates unity and belonging on multiple levels. Folding circles is a transformative body-heart-mind practice that invites curiosity, discovery and connection unique to each folder. Students explore and gain a hands-on understanding of the nature of pattern as observed throughout nature, the arts, sciences, math, philosophy and social and inner wellbeing.

Folding circles is a unique process revealing through movement and relationship how everything is connected and interdependent. Using eyes, hands and mind students will reconfigure the circle into 2-D/3-D forms using proportional folding, measuring and spatial manipulation. Multiple folded circles can be joined to form endless systems of pattern and design that sparks invention and creative spirit.

Students may work individually and/or together; informal group sharing gently supports the learning process throughout as students notice and reflect on how the circle informs their own process and resonates with or differs from others. Folding circles develops observational thinking, attention awareness, creative problem solving, community building, cognitive growth, social-emotional connections, fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.

Students are encouraged to notice how circle patterns show up in their daily lives throughout the residency, weaving in a practice of mindfulness and attention awareness. Folding the circle is a comprehensive manipulative tool new to everyone and can be useful beyond the time of residency.
