Program Requirements An overhead projector, a screen, a power source with outlet to plug in my laptop. Students will need pens and paper. Optional - if iPads are available, program can scale to use them. If students have iPads, each student will need headphones.

About the Artist

Mic is a global Hip Hop and spoken word artist. Mic has toured extensively in Africa, Europe and the U.S. and is a Lead Organizer for the Afrikan Hiphop Caravan. His company Global Fam he has helped build two computer centers in Burundi Central Africa.

Teaching Philosophy

Mic encourages students to use art to critically engage their environment, identity, and purpose. Mic teaches that Hip Hop is a tool for accessing the truth about who we are and can be. "Through creativity we find our voice and become who we are."

Program Description

Mic will teach various writing techniques employed in popular rap music and spoken word poetry including the use of rhythm and rhyme, chorus, hooks, repetition and call and response. Voice projection, mic control, breath control, stage presence and memorization will also be examined, studied and practiced. Writing to Hip Hop beats and well as writing spoken word to be recited without music will be developed in this residency. Educational components of this residency are music based and literacy based. Students will learn some basic music theory regarding time signatures and tempo, measures and notes and fractions of notes. Students will be reading about their craft as a class and writing and reading their own lyrics. Students will examine examples of work produced by other professional artists in the genre.

This program can be scaled to fit STEAM/digital arts-based curriculum using iPads.
