Program Description

RESIDENCY GOALS

1. To convey to students and teachers that music is humanly organized sound. Any object around us has sound making properties and the potential for making music. Likewise, every way we move has the capacity to be a dance.

2. Music and dance are cross-disciplinary. They thoroughly integrate the A (ART) into the STEM manifesto.

3. To learn to prioritize curiosity, connections, sense-making, coordination, critical thinking, fun and critical thinking skills.

Our residencies integrate well with Math, Literacy, Social Studies, History and Science.

- Integrates with science by situating inquiry based science instruction into a project based approach that arises from the real world.

- Creating and editing movement, musical instruments and musical compositions directly ties into the English/Language Arts curriculum and standards on many levels, from planning and composition to reflection and editing, ending with publishing.

- Encourages students to explore themselves and the world around them through the lens of dance & music, using their bodies & their own musical instruments they create as a catalyst of expression.

- Active exploration of the mathematical concepts behind rhythm and polyrhythms.

- Visual thinking strategies needed to create powerful images are integrated with aural/oral thinking strategies needed to create successful compositions are stressed using the terms, "observe, describe, and interpret."

- Cross-disciplinary and thoroughly integrates all aspects of the STEM manifesto.

WORK WITH STUDENTS

"Where In The World?"
Since the dawn of history, people around the world dance and make music and musical instruments from objects found in their environment. This residency empowers students and teachers alike to invite music and dance into their lives as they learn how to make, name and play their very own instruments and create their own dance moves and choreographies.

Travel without leaving home! Where in the world do you want to go? Pick your cultural area! Explore the world's music with attention to specific musical styles and cultural contexts then create and learn to play some simple instruments rooted in that culture but made with upcycled and re-purposed materials. This residency can be taught by one or two teaching artists. What cultures do you want to explore and create with your students? i.e. Mexico, Native America, France, South America, Hawaii, Oceania, Indonesia, Africa, India, China, Japan, Middle East, Latin America.

This residency is available in English and Spanish.
