Program Description

Lindsay (Teaching Artist) will lead the class in a group songwriting activity over five days which will include listening, building harmony (learning and using chords / sounds), melody, writing lyrics, recording and group reflection. Students will be encouraged to develop listening / aural skills, mood and feeling awareness (social emotional / self regulation), self-expression ( writing / communication), singing (community building), reflection and inquiry (through observation and feedback). Students will use keyboards, notebooks and other tools to contribute to the song(s).

Day 1 - Harmony Building (chords + sounds)
Day 2 - Lyric Writing (exploring feelings + stories)
Day 3 - Melody Writing (listening, scaffolding on previous work)
Day 4 - Recording (students will help record the song by playing, singing, adding rhythm)
Day 5 - Reflection (listen to the song as a group, final touches, reflection activities)

The structure of the 5 sessions will use scaffolding to build on the previous sessions material, eventually culminating in a finished piece. The class will work together or in small groups to compose one or more songs, depending on the goals of the residency.
